Творческая биография

художник Артур ПоттцArtist's Statement

My paintings follow in the tradition of postwar European artists, namely Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Nicholas de Stael and Oscar Kokoschka; here in Canada, I greatly admire the works of John Hartman. My paintings utilize abstraction as a method and landscape experience as a source. I use the technique of abstract expressionism and the frisson of colour and texture to create my work. The spark of the initial idea and the energy in the act of painting should go forward in tandem. The paintings must appear to come together effortlessly in order to convey the illusion of light and space. Possibly, because of my year of study in Mexico, I find that much of my work is related to the equatorial light in the landscape and atmosphere of Andalucia.

Education I studied Fine Art on a scholarship at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 1960. At the Instituto, I studied painting with James Pinto and Fred Samuelson; sculpture, with Lothar Kestenbaum. Tony Onley lived in San Miguel at the time, and I was influenced by the paper collages that he was creating. After a year in Mexico, I returned to Canada to study design at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and subsequently spent several years in the hospitality interior design industry, with projects in Canada, the USA, Caribbean, Mexico and latterly Russia.
